We Want Your Gear The PTO’s DEI Committee is collecting gently used clothing and LPS gear. If your student has outgrown their LPS gear, we’d love to give it a second life.
We are also collecting practical clothing - hoodies, long sleeve shirts, gloves, and similar items - to support migrant workers who will be working in local orchards and fields this spring.
Donations can be dropped off at the front office or to Mr. Randall in the Middle School gathering space.
Let’s reduce, reuse, and support our community at the same time.

Welcome to May, Comets!
As we enter into the last full month of this school year, we're so excited to share that LIFT's Summer Program is open and ready to accept registrations!
Just like LIFT's school year programming, summertime LIFT is offered at no-cost and includes everything from ice cream shop visits and coffee chats to beach days (lots of those), hikes, and everything else that we adore about a Northern Michigan summer.
View this summer's calendar, take a look at some summer-specific FAQ's, and get your student registered to join by following this link or the QR code on the flyer.
In the meantime, we can't wait to see you for our May activities laid out here.

Día del Niño LPS celebrated Día del Niño with a joyful day full of games, food, culture, and community! Elementary students participated in sack races, three-legged races, spoon races, hopscotch, soccer, face painting, temporary tattoos, and many other activities throughout the day. Students across K–12 joined in the fun by helping with activities, sharing meals together, and celebrating alongside one another.
Families and community members played a major role in making the day special by volunteering in the building, preparing delicious desserts, and sharing meaningful elements of Hispanic culture with our students. The celebration also included a delicious Mexican lunch enjoyed by students and staff.
Thank you to everyone who helped create such a vibrant and memorable day for our school community!

Congratulations Eliza Aldridge for competing in Poetry Out Loud at the national level and receiving a Congressional Recognition Award. This was the second time in one month that she met with Representative Jack Bergman in Washington D.C., after also meeting with him earlier this month during the LPS Close Up government trip. We are proud of Eliza for representing our school and community on a national stage with passion and dedication. You rock Eliza! |
Student Athlete Signing Celebration Leland Public School celebrated three outstanding student athletes during a special signing ceremony today. Two students officially signed to continue their soccer careers and one student signed to play basketball at Aquinas College.
Coaches, teammates, classmates, staff, and families gathered together to recognize their hard work, leadership, and dedication both on and off the court and field. Coaches shared thoughtful words about each student’s growth, character, and impact on their teams as the high school community came together to applaud and support this exciting next step in their journeys.
Congratulations to all three students on this incredible achievement!

Salmon Release Mrs. Zywicki’s science classes participated in the Michigan Department of Natural Resources Salmon in the Classroom project, raising salmon throughout the school year before releasing them into Lake Michigan at the mouth of the Leland River.
High school students were invited to take part in the release day and help celebrate the completion of this hands-on learning experience.
This project gave students the opportunity to learn about ecosystems, fish life cycles, conservation, and the importance of protecting Michigan’s natural resources through real-world scientific experiences outside the classroom.

Courtroom Classroom Connection Ninth grade English students visited the Leelanau Government Center as a deep dive into the US judicial process while reading Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird. Students were able to ask questions to a panel made up of Judge Paciorka, two prosecuting attorneys, and the victims’ rights advocate.
A tour of the courtroom and deliberation room set the stage for the reading of the trial against one of the novel’s characters: Tom Robinson.
After reading the novel, students will analyze the numerous themes of the novel and how the judicial system has changed and/or remained the same over the last century.

MI Career Quest Building a bridge between the classroom and the future is a core part of our high school experience. Recently, our 9th-grade students attended MI CareerQuest Northwest, a premier hands-on career exploration event held in Traverse City.
This event is designed to move beyond traditional job fairs by allowing students to actively engage with local industry professionals.
Students explored four high-demand quadrants: Construction, Health Sciences, Information Technology/Business, and Manufacturing. From operating heavy machinery and practicing automotive repair to engaging with emergency services, healthcare providers, and local agricultural experts, our students gained tangible insights into the diverse career paths available right here in Northwest Michigan.
By interacting with over 60 regional employers, students didn't just hear about jobs—they experienced the tools, technology, and skills required for success. This event is a vital component of our career development curriculum, helping students align their high school coursework with their future aspirations. We look forward to welcoming your 8th graders into these exciting opportunities next year as they begin their own journey toward professional discovery!
