"Congratulations to the winners of the LPS Spelling Bee! These incredible spellers exhausted both the 450-word study list AND the supplementary (unstudied) words, so Mrs. Vann had to choose random words from the dictionary to determine our winner. 1st place: Clara Aldridge, 8th grade. 2nd place: Minna Danziger, 5th grade. Alternate: Levi Ulbrich, 7th grade. Clara and Minna will go on to spell at the Regional Spelling Bee in TC in March, where LPS is the defending champion! Hazel Danziger was last year's regional winner. Levi will spell if either Clara or Minna are ill or unable to participate. Thank you to our student and community audience. Your energy and encouragement was felt and appreciated on stage! Go, Comet spellers!" - Mrs. Aldridge

"On Friday, January 12th my Outdoor Education class had their end-of-semester outdoor experience. Students have been studying tree identification for our northern mixed forests. They have also been learning to interpret topographic maps and use cardinal directions to navigate. We spent the day at the Leelanau Conservancy's Houdek Dunes Natural Area where the students took what they had studied in the classroom out into the field. A short hike was focused on tree identification (which is pretty challenging in the winter). After a pizza lunch on the bus (thanks Mr. Al!), the kids used maps and compasses and worked together in small groups to find features on a scavenger hunt. They had to use their map and compass to navigate roughly 3 miles of trails split into different sections with multiple intersections. They even had to do a little bit of off-trail navigation to find two of the features. Nobody got lost or frostbite, so it was a great success!" - Mr. Seguin

National Writers Series The best literary short stories tell tales that are as rich and complex as any novel but in condensed form packed with emotional resonance. Studying extraordinary works of short fiction is the best way for aspiring prose writers to strengthen their work. In this nine-week hybrid form course, students will read and discuss a diverse collection of excellent short stories, analyze the craft of their construction, and apply lessons learned to the process of drafting and revising their own stories. Each student will be coached one-on-one through the process of constructing and revising at least one complete work of short fiction. These two-hour long workshops will meet in-person every other week from January 27th through March 16th. In alternating weeks, we will meet on Zoom to discuss a short story and have individual conferences. In person classes will be held at CommonGrounds in Traverse City at 10 a.m. on the following dates: January 27, 2024, February 10, 2024, February 24, 2024, March 9, 2024. Zoom meetings will be held at 10 a.m. on these dates, January 20, 2024, February 3, 2024, February 17, 2024, March 2, 2024, March 16, 2024. After spring-break we will meet in person one last time – on Saturday April 6, 2024—to celebrate the students’ accomplishments! Enrollment for this accelerated fiction workshop is limited to 10.
